The current generation of university students has arguably greater signposting towards healthy lifestyles than previous generations.
But the University of Sunderland is determined to take things a step further. Here we take a look at how, every week, UoS works to keep students physically – and mentally – fit.
Wellness Mondays
Start your week off the right way with our Wellness Mondays’ scheme.
The team at CitySpace provide a drop in session for students to learn more about their physical condition and mental health.
And it’s not just students benefitting, staff can call in too, just to make sure they aren’t too overworked.
Adventure Club
Action-men and women can make the most of the University’s coastal location by taking part in surfing, paddle-boarding and a selection of watersports which are held throughout the academic year.
It costs just £10 to join the team at Adventure Sunderland on Roker Beach.
Away-day trips
Regular trips to Forestry Commission, National Trust, and National Heritage sites for mountain biking and hill walking are all available through the University. Why spend your free time in front of the TV, when you can be enjoying some North East fresh air.
Gym
When the Wearside weather gets too bracing, there’s always our state-of-the-art gym at CitySpace available to students, staff and the public.
The team do special offers for students that are joining sports teams to encourage them to engage with the gym facilities. So there’s no excuse.
Elite Athlete Scheme
The scheme is designed to assist students who perform at a high level either in a sporting team or an individual sport, whilst studying at the University.
We aim to support students and help them achieve both their academic and sporting potential.
Past scheme members have included everyone from World Champion martial artists, Commonwealth gymnasts, County cricket players, European athletic competitors and Six Nations rugby champions. Pretty impressive.
Adventure through Wellbeing
This unique programme helps combine exercise with counselling by aiming to improve mental wellbeing.
Whether it be a weekend of hiking in the hills or a week night on the coast in the summer, this programme helps students make friends and stay healthy.
Athletics Club
Our Athletics Club has recently developed links with Sunderland Harriers allowing our students to join their established training groups and access their training facilities at Silksworth.
Alternative sports
We also have a host of non-traditional sports on offer such as our airsoft - competitive team shooting sport - and e-sports teams offering something a little different from running about a muddy field.
Strength & Conditioning sessions for teams
Our instructors at CitySpace help our sports teams develop physically with regular strength and conditioning sessions. It helps ensure they are at their fittest when in competition.
BUCS: British Universities and Colleges Sport
Wednesday is sports day.
Team Sunderland has over 30 teams competing in BUCS competitions every Wednesday as well as at weekends. They also enter students for national competitions such as BUCS Nationals.
