Suitable for professionals working in a range of human service organisations – including social work, community and youth work, health, and education – this short course will help you become a reflexive practitioner by promoting research mindedness in the workplace.
You'll have the opportunity to study alongside other professionals from similar areas of practice, and you'll complete a piece of research relevant to you. The course aims to address the barriers that can be faced by practitioners in terms of what research is and what it involves by focusing on the idea that practitioners already have the skills and knowledge to conduct research due to existing experience.
Reflexivity will be utilised throughout the course to support you to reframe your skills by making links between practice and research. You'll be encouraged to explore your own values, beliefs, and experiences to develop a better understanding of yourself and the position of others.
The course is delivered at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's via seven two-hour interactive workshops and three two-hour group supervision sessions.
You'll complete a co-constructed piece of group practice research with your cohort based on Emancipatory Practice Development where service evaluation takes a bottom-up approach, looking firstly at how practice is received. The topic of the practice research will emerge through the teaching process and will be based on an area of research relevant to you.

This course, worth 30 credits, is suitable for practitioners who have a previous Level 6 qualification or equivalent in work experience.
To be eligible to receive this course fully funded, you must be employed by a Sunderland-based business. If you are self-funding, your suitability will be assessed by an academic on completion of the application form.
The fee for this course is £750.
