Overview

This course is taught in the multi-million pound John Dawson Sciences Complex which features a brand new CPD suite for training health and pharmaceutical professionals, multi-disciplinary science labs and new facilities for proteomics, drug discovery, pharmacy, and health sciences. You can be assured of a quality experience in contemporary facilities.

The contact time for this course is five full days over a four-month period. You will be offered the choice of studying at Level 6 or Level 7 depending on your experience. When you complete the course you will receive a Certificate to show that you have gained 20 credits at your chosen level. You may be able to transfer these credits to a diploma or degree course.

Course structure

This course is delivered by University of Sunderland Clinical Sciences lecturers and a specialist in contraceptive and sexual health.

It is taught in five full days over a four-month period at the University of Sunderland. Each day uses a variety of teaching and learning methods including interactive workshops and will focus on a specific topic that you can then consolidate in clinical practice.

Assessment will be by a portfolio of practice outcomes and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) utilising simulated patients in a variety of contraception and sexual health-based consultations.

Topics covered on this course include:

Consultation skills, consent, Fraser competence
Oral contraceptives and Depo Provera injections
Long-acting reversible contraceptives and enabling choice
Sexually transmitted infections
Pregnancy testing
Emergency contraception
Breast self-examination

Our Clinical Skills Suite is equipped with a range of clinical equipment for training health professionals. The cutting-edge equipment is backed up with excellent IT facilities and helpful IT support staff.
Clinical Skills Suite
We’ve got thousands of relevant books and e-books, with many more titles available through the inter-library loan service. We also subscribe to a comprehensive range of print and electronic journals so you can access the most reliable and up-to- date academic and industry articles. There are nearly 9,000 journal titles, mostly in electronic format.
