Master the building blocks of storytelling through podcasts. Learn to sculpt using music, audio branding, and sound effects. Understand your audience and build your own brand.
This one-day masterclass is tailor-made to offer an overview of aspects of audio podcasting, whether you have already started on this journey and are looking to enhance your skills, or are just starting out. Expect a quick-fire exploration of some of the key aspects of audio podcast production, arming you with some of the tools and know-how to confidently create your own pilot podcasts.
You'll be taught by Jay Sykes, who has produced two programmes for BBC Radio 4, the audio drama ‘William’s Castle’, and the audio documentary ‘Vessels of Memory: Glass Ships of Sunderland’. Jay has previously worked on building podcasting strategies and productions with New Writing North, Stand Alone, Mind, Changing Relations, Pink Collar Gallery, and ‘Culture House Podcast’ in partnership with Sunderland City Council
With industry-ready recording studios situated on campus, this course offers access to a range of professional standard equipment, offering a quick-fire but thorough experience across a range of aspects of audio and podcast production
Understanding your audience, their pain and pleasure points, your own goals, how audio production / podcasting fits into your KPIs, and building your brand.
Tips and tricks to master the building blocks of audio storytelling: We will cover scripting, interviewing, and conversation facilitation, that can help your podcast stand out from the crowd.
We’ll discuss some of the potential setups for recording your podcast, to suit a range of budgets.
An overview of the building blocks of your editing toolkit: How to cut, fade, cross-fade, adjust levels, panning, utilise effects and filters, restructure your content, and how to sculpt using music, audio branding, and sound effects.
We’ll explore use of trailers, logos, graphics, audiograms, content marketing, and other tools and techniques to build the world around your podcast brand.
Once you have created your podcast, how will you distribute it? With a range of options available, we will explore some of the key hosting platforms you could consider.

To be eligible to receive this course fully funded, you must be employed by a Sunderland-based business. If you are self-funding, your suitability will be assessed by an academic on completion of the application form.
The fee for this course is £125.
