Case Study
Lisa Akhtar
After receiving the Aziz Foundation Scholarship, which grants 100% master’s tuition fee to British Muslim students, Lisa Akhtar successfully completed her MSc in Inequality and Society in 2023.
Lisa now works as a Functional Skills Tutor, teaching English and Maths to apprentices, often from overseas, who do not have GCSE qualifications. It's a job she says she loves, and a role she wouldn’t have achieved without the support of the Aziz Foundation Scholarship, and the qualifications she gained at the University:
“Being able to study with a full scholarship from the Aziz Foundation has 100% given me an opportunity to progress in my career following my graduation. I am very proud to be able support young learners. There are many reasons why someone may need to sit their English and Maths subjects again, and as a Functional Skills Tutor I can offer them another route to gain those qualifications in post-16 education.
For me, gaining the Aziz Scholarship was about representation, equality, and accessibility for Muslims. It's vital that British Muslims progress in society and have that opportunity to study within Higher Education.
I’m really enjoying my current role and being able to work flexibly with a supportive team of colleagues is amazing."
