Year 2
For a Diploma award you must choose two 30 credit modules. If you wish to complete the Masters you must choose two 30 credit modules and Academic Practice: Independent Project (60 credits).
Supervision and Support of Medical Learners (30 credits)
Gain the skills required to be a supervisor, assessor, mentor or coach at different times on different days. Grow your knowledge on how to manage and support individual trainees as well as consider how they support a wider group of trainees or supervisors.
This module is aimed at those who are personal tutors, year leads, programme leads, educational or clinical supervisors, and can be chosen in year 1 or year 2.
Research Methods in Medical Education (30 credits)
Develop an in-depth understanding of a range of approaches, which can be used to produce empirical evidence. Learn qualitative approaches which will allow you to select the most appropriate method and approach for your research question. Build on your understanding and skills in research design, data collection and analysis. This module is essential if you wish to complete the Masters qualification with a research project.
Leading and Managing Medical Education (30 credits)
Explore leadership styles and approaches as well as examining student success and the management of programmes. Study aspects of leadership and management of particular relevance to training such as quality assurance of medical education, dealing with complaints or concerns, handling complexity, balancing training and service, managing training programmes and managing people. Focus on experiential learning using case studies and stories from local and regional medical educational leaders. This module will benefit those aspiring to be or currently in senior educational lead roles at either undergraduate or postgraduate level.
Medical Education Mastery (30 credits)
Examine a range of pedagogical approaches, which are central to contemporary medical education. Develop your knowledge and skills through workshops and practicals enabling you to practice techniques and different teaching approaches. Focus on curriculum design and how assessment drives learning. This module is aimed at those who are regular teachers and are looking to advance their skills further or those who did their Certificate in Medical Education a long time ago and are returning to educational practice.
Technology Enhanced Learning (30 credits)
Critically examine the theoretical principles, delivery methodologies, opportunities and risks associated with Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in medical education. Learn through a series of workshops, how this can be done through building a digital community of practice using shared space tools.
Academic Practice: Independent Project (60 credits)
Develop your applied research capabilities by completion of a substantive research project or systematic review of literature surrounding a topic or phenomenon of educational interest. You will be allocated a project supervisor and you will negotiate an appropriate topic relevant to their academic practice. Learn using a combination of lectures, learning sets and peer support from across the region. You must have completed Research Methodology in Medical Education before undertaking this module if you plan to complete a full research project.
