Overview
The Enhanced Clinical Practitioner (ECP) programme allows you to develop ECP competencies aligned to the knowledge, skills and behaviours identified in the apprenticeship occupational standards, within your scope of practice. The programme aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to elevate your skills and knowledge to an enhanced level of practice within a multi-disciplinary team.
The development of this programme is driven by national and local NHS strategic workforce development and in response to the availability of a new apprenticeship standard for this role within health and social care. This includes non-NHS settings such as forensic, social, and prison services.
The apprenticeship standard is not profession specific and is generic in nature, reflecting the diverse requirement of enhanced practice. You will normally already be employed within a particular area of clinical practice, and this course aims to equip you with enhanced skills to effectively contribute to a discrete part of the patient’s journey. ECP’s will work across a range of specialisms and the competency framework employed in the programme allows the apprentice, the university, and the employer to set appropriate work-based competencies that will mirror the enhanced role within the practice environment, and to provide a sound knowledge base on which to do this.
The course covers aspects that are particular to all ECP (such as service improvement and health literacy) and aspects that are specific to a particular clinical role such as clinical risk management.
The course content includes:
- Anatomy, physiology, pathology, relative to job role
- Clinical assessment
- Reflective practice
- Critical appraisal
- Clinical risk management
- Patient/public involvement
- Medico-legal aspects
- Health literacy
- Learning theories and application
- Leadership theories and application
- Service improvement
Assessment during the programme consists of ongoing (or continuous) assessment in skill development in clinical practice, developing a learning plan for other staff, and a knowledge portfolio. This apprenticeship will run for 13 months with an additional three months allocated for the completion of an End-point Assessment.
