Explore our Living Lab and Helen McArdle House, home to state of the art facilities and equipment for our Nursing, Midwifery, and Paramedic Science students.
The Living Lab
Our Living Lab reflects various contemporary care provision settings and is made up of several specialist facilities, including mock hospital wards, pharmacy dispensaries, and a high-fidelity immersive simulation suite. The Lab also has an OSCE suite – this is a number of stations within a circuit where students rotate to complete various tasks in each one.
The immersive simulation suite allows you to experience a range of healthcare events in simulated environments, mimicking scenarios as closely as possible. An adjacent task trainer room can aid with the development of clinical and non-technical skills and integral cameras enable participants to view live or recorded footage in the dedicated debrief room.
The Lab is also home to a range of simulation manikins such as SimMan patient simulators (SimMan 3G, SimMan ALS, SimJunior, SimMom, and SimBaby), CAE Apollo and Caesar manikins, anatomically realistic SimBodies, and lower-fidelity simulation manikins. A range of other clinical equipment and a pop-up training ambulance are available to complement the facilities.
Helen McArdle House
A short walk from the Living Lab is Helen McArdle House. Outside, you'll find our bespoke training ambulance which contains the latest high-fidelity simulation infrastructure. This includes the ability to remotely film, record, and observe simulated scenarios in class or remotely on personal devices, while working alongside experienced senior lecturers within Paramedic Science. The ambulance has been designed to enable you to experience the day-to-day work of a paramedic.
Like the Living Lab, Helen McArdle House also comprises some specialist mock hospital wards, including children’s wards with baby and child interactive manikins where you can carry out simulated scenarios that feel as close to real life as possible. There's also a mental health ward, which has been designed to feel like a real ward and features bedrooms, a day room, seclusion room, and treatment room.
