Course modules
Core modules:
Engineering Principles for Manufacturing (30 credits)
Cover the engineering principles related to manufacturing engineering including the use and control of electrical power, the fundamental principles of mechanics, an overview of manufacturing processes, sensing and instrumentation systems, an introduction to automated manufacturing systems and the theory and principles involved in using and selecting materials.
Product Oriented Manufacturing (30 credits)
Explore the processes involved in ensuring that the design of a product is aligned with the process that will be used to manufacture it using the principles of the Design for Manufacturing methodology.
Automation and Mechatronics (30 credits)
Learn how to create automated systems that can operate collaboratively using technologies such as PLCs, HMIs and SCADA. Examine the issues relating to the increasing levels of connectivity for such devices such as cybersecurity and integrity.
Project/Dissertation (60 credits)
Using your research and critical analysis skills, draw on the knowledge you have gained during the course of the programme to address a real engineering problem or research question at the forefront of the discipline.
Optional modules (choose one):
Advanced Materials Engineering (30 credits)
Study the latest research into the production, characterisation and application of advanced materials.
Smart Factories (30 credits)
Investigate the latest technology that can be deployed to improve the effectiveness of manufacturing facilities including the use of Smart Instrumentation, Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and Robotics and Automation technologies.
Engineering Management Practice (30 credits)
Learn about the issues facing modern engineering operations to include operations management and improvement, lean manufacturing techniques, supply chain management and development, maintenance strategy and development and condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.
Some modules have prerequisites. Read more about what this means in our Help and Advice article.
