We pride ourselves on our student support and guidance, from our award-winning We Care team, to our one-stop shop for all enquiries, the Gateway.
Our services
Here's a selection of the services that are available to you while you are studying with us:
Student Financial Guidance
Our Student Financial Guidance team provide expert guidance on all aspects of student finance. We were the first university in the UK to develop a free budgeting tool for our students to help manage their finances during their time at university and our specialist team can provide support and guidance on any and all areas of student finance including:
Information on the student finance system
Advice on alternative sources of financial support
Help with any problems whilst applying for student finance
Contacting (with your consent) organisations such as SLC and SFE
Assistance with claims for state benefits
Help with applications for additional funding during your studies

The Gateway
Here to act as your one-stop shop and provide support and guidance throughout your university journey, The Gateway team is here to help resolve your problem or advise you on what to do next. You'll also be kept up to date with the progress of your query via the Compass portal. The services offered by The Gateway are designed to provide you with a quick and effective solution to your queries and are constantly evolving to meet the changing demands of our students.
Wellbeing team
Our Wellbeing team offer a free and confidential service, and can provide advice on a range of issues such as stress, anxiety and low mood, self-harming behaviours, bereavement and loss, eating issues, dependency and addiction, concerns about sexuality, issues with self-esteem and confidence and long-term mental health difficulties. You can access these services in person, or make a confidential appointment by phone, email or using an online referral form.
Chaplaincy
The Chaplaincy team are a friendly, informal, confidential and independent listening ear. They are also a resource for religious, spiritual and ethical exploration.
Disability Support
If you have a disability (including mental health and/or long-standing health conditions), the Disability Support team will work with you to ensure that you have the learning support you need. This includes advice on and assessments for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) where appropriate, via our Assessment Centre.
The team are experienced, friendly disability professionals and always look forward to engaging with new students. Appointments can be made via the contact details below and we will always try to use your preferred method of contact for any meetings that are arranged (email, telephone, Teams). The discussion will include how we can, with your agreement, inform your tutors of any challenges you may face and list the support you require.
Early contact from Applicants is welcomed and encouraged. If you are unsure whether you may be eligible for support from the team, we would still recommend getting in contact for an informal discussion.
The progression team are here to guide you through the use of different services, systems and support available at the University, to help you make the most of your time here.
International Student Support

Sunderland Futures
Sunderland Futures is the University of Sunderland's Career Service. The team can help you with all kinds of opportunities, be it a student job in the local area, summer work, volunteering opportunities or even professional mentoring.
We Care Team
The We Care Team is a dedicated point of contact for care-experienced students and students estranged from their parents/carers. They offer individual, bespoke support whenever students need it during their time at university and beyond.
They can assist with a wide range of issues including:
Accommodation 52 weeks of the year if you arrange it in advance
Student finance and funding
Employment and part-time work
Academic queries such as taking time out of your course
Mental health and wellbeing
Accessing the We Care bursary of £2,500 for each year of study
