We can't wait to meet you at this exclusive event on Saturday 15 March for those who hold an offer with us for September 2025 entry. You'll be able to participate in an exciting subject workshop, campus and accommodation tours, and much more.

The Offer Holder Day programme will be running at both our City Campus and Sir Tom Cowie Campus. See your subject workshop below for the relevant campus. 

Please note, this event is not suitable for international students. It's for offer holders living in the UK only.

As part of your Offer Holder Day, you'll be invited to take part in interactive workshops and get a feel for university life.

DNA lab session

In our state-of-the-art laboratories, you will perform part of a laboratory test to identify which genetic variant of a taste receptor gene is present in a sample of DNA. Using a DNA model, you will be able to see how changes in genetic information affect the protein manufacturing process.

Embrace the power of a dynamic and challenging course to transform lives through a diverse and rewarding career in paramedicine. You'll participate in two sessions that will demonstrate different aspects of our work as well as show you how you’ll be taught in seminars and workshops.

Critical care teamwork: Undertake an interactive management of a clinical scenario and understand the importance of communication, planning, and teamwork.

Resilience and educational principles: Engage and take part in a small interactive educational activity to gain an insight into the holistic approach of paramedic science.

Audition preparation for stage and screen

Auditioning for roles on stage and screen is a big part of this industry. This practical workshop will cover key aspects of preparing for auditions and self-tapes for roles in theatre and on-screen in the professional industry. You'll work on a few audition pieces throughout the session and get the chance to perform for the group on your own, or in pairs. Explore the various monologues available to actors for performance, explore your casting, and develop your performance ready for auditioning in your first year.

Ever wondered why things smell the way they do?

All odours result from airborne molecules activating our ‘smell’ receptors found in the mucus membranes of our nose. For example; cinnamaldehyde smells like cinnamon and vanillin smells like vanilla! In this activity, you'll convert butyric acid to ethylbutanoate using common organic chemistry techniques in our state-of-the-art chemistry lab. This small modification to chemical structure changes the biological activity of the molecule, and you should end up with a compound that smells sweetly of pineapple!

Join us for an exciting, tech-savvy adventure where creativity meets cutting-edge technology! The event is designed to be interactive, fun, and hands-on, featuring two captivating activities powered by Google's AI FaceMesh model.

Computer Science

Using Google's FaceMesh model, you will have the opportunity to draw your own mask and map it onto your own face through a webcam.

Then get ready for some coding fun in the second activity, where technology meets reality. Using the same powerful FaceMesh model, you'll implement facial detection and extraction from a live webcam feed. You can watch the model identify faces and line them up in a mugshot gallery.

Game Development

You'll work in our Games Development Zone to create a computer game. Using the latest hardware and software systems, such as Unity you will develop a game and test it out in our Testing Zone.

Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics

Red Team v Blue Team Challenge: The Red Team will take on the role of attackers, attempting to breach security measures and access confidential data. Meanwhile, the Blue Team will defend the servers, working to prevent breaches, identify threats, and protect sensitive information.

Framing ‘dangerous’ offenders

Consider the concept of who and what is ‘dangerous’ and how this influences the way the criminal justice system manages risk and deals with perceived ‘dangerousness’. We will explore how we conceptualise sexual and violent crimes through legislative responses and the sentencing practices that have been rapid over the last decade. Drawing on current case studies, we will discuss if the term ‘dangerous’ is useful or problematic within criminological practices.

Choose from three taster sessions, covering the different types of engineering study options we offer here at the University:

Mechanical Engineering: Using small radio-controlled cars, you will look at the design of the structure of the drive control and the mechanical properties of what allows it to drive and be controlled.

Electrical Engineering: From an electrical engineering perspective, you will work on the power control of the cars, the lighting and motor system, and the electrical power system. How is the car powered? How does it work? Get hands-on by soldering the control and power system to make the cars work.

Sustainable Design Engineering: In this session, you will work on the overall design of the body of the car, the materials it’s made from, and its performance. Using a wind tunnel you will attach different shells to the car and see the effect these have on the performance. Using 3D printed parts you will be able to change the look, feel, and most importantly, performance of the car.

Through these three sessions, you can see how your chosen courses work together on different elements of the same technology, giving you an overall view of engineering at the University of Sunderland.
