After finishing my A Levels, I was unsure of what career path to pursue. I decided to investigate the different courses that the University of Sunderland had to offer and became interested in the BA (Hons) Events Management degree. I liked that the course provided an opportunity for a placement year in industry and thought that the modules sounded engaging and interesting. After listening to several positive student testimonials, I enquired about the course and secured a place through clearing. The University of Sunderland was very convenient for me as I live nearby and was already familiar with the campuses.
In 2019, I successfully obtained a placement in an events management role at the award-winning arts and entertainment center, The Customs House. I assisted the venue’s Event Manager with the planning and delivery of a wide range of events to external clients, cultural partners, and community groups. I am grateful to have been given many opportunities to demonstrate my independence and often liaised with new and existing clients. I believe that the academic knowledge I have gained, combined with this practical experience, has significantly improved my employability and will help me to secure roles in the industry after graduation.
I have found that the University of Sunderland supports you in becoming the best version of yourself. You’ll receive a wealth of guidance and career advice. Studying a degree course can have a significant impact on you, not just because of the qualification you’ve gained but also because of how you will develop as a person.
Ideally after graduation I would love to obtain an events role in a hotel or venue producing large-scale events. My placement year allowed me to explore the many different aspects of event management, from corporate to celebratory, so I am interested in a wide range of fields.
My experience of studying at the University has been outstanding. Throughout my degree I have been supported and encouraged by my lecturers who are so passionate about their student’s achieving their goals. I have made friends for life as well as industry connections and have developed academically, professionally and personally."
