Bethany Yuill

Seaham, UK

BA (Hons) Events Management

Bethany decided to study at the University of Sunderland after attending an Open Day. In the future, she hopes to have her own events management business. She feels her time at Sunderland has helped her decide exactly what she wants to do after she graduates.

I chose to study at the University of Sunderland after visiting a variety of universities. Sunderland not only felt like the best fit for me, but was the highest ranked out of those I visited. I felt Sunderland had the ability to offer me a variety of different experiences, including Study Abroad, work placements and volunteering.

Attending an Open Day and speaking to the lecturers is what really persuaded me to choose Sunderland. I found it incredibly useful. The University also offers Applicant Days, which are fantastic for both applicants and parents. The Applicant Days feature workshops and talks on all aspects of university life, which are so informative and really helped my parents understand things like student finance.

The hands-on experience you gain is fantastic. Right from the first year, you are trusted and put in charge of your own event. I felt this helped me both learn about myself, and which part of the industry I want to work in after I graduate.

The University itself is incredibly inclusive and there are so many helpful services you can tap into and clubs and societies. I am currently receiving support from the Employability and Enterprise Hub in applying for graduate jobs and ensuring my CV is up to scratch.

During my time at university, my career has developed from working part-time in retail to being offered a role as an event intern on my placement year, and subsequently being kept on part-time! This experience has helped me understand exactly what it is I want to do in my career. When I first started university, I always wanted to work in wedding planning. However, as I’ve developed and gained new experiences in the industry, I’ve realised that I’d prefer to work in corporate events, specifically on the operational side.

After I graduate, I’d really like to gain a place in a graduate role or scheme, working in event operations for a company or hotel. In the long term, I’d love to have my own events management business.

I would definitely recommend the Tourism, Events and Hospitality department at Sunderland – all of the lecturers are incredibly helpful and they really care about each individual student. They have a wide range of sector experience and insights, which is great for us students, especially those who aren’t 100% sure which role they'd like to pursue after graduating.

To sum up, my experience has been truly life-changing. Studying at the University of Sunderland has allowed me to develop academically, professionally, and as a person. I've gained so much experience in the events industry, and have also gained a lot of confidence in myself. My time at Sunderland has only made me more determined and motivated to have a long and successful career in the events and hospitality industry.
