BA (Hons) Childhood Studies with Integrated Foundation Year

Chloe Bourne chose to study at the University of Sunderland as the Integrated Foundation Year would enable her to progress onto the BA (Hons) Childhood Studies course. Since starting her course, she has been enjoying learning the skills she’ll need for the next step of her student journey and has joined a sports team, making new friends along the way. She plans to become a primary school teacher in the future.

I was studying hairdressing before university, but wanted to stretch myself and make a difference in children’s lives to prepare them for the future. I chose to study at the University of Sunderland because it offered the opportunity to study the Integrated Foundation Year, which would enable me to progress onto the BA (Hons) Childhood Studies course. Sunderland is also my local university and it has a high reputation for the support it offers to students both while they are studying and after graduation.

The best part of the course so far is the wide range of knowledge I’ve gained, which has prepared me for the next step of the course. From study skills and maths, to the issues surrounding society, I've learned things that help with my day-to-day life, as well as changing my perspective of how I view the world.

I would tell any prospective students looking to study at Sunderland to go for it. If you’re worried about not knowing anyone, there’s no need – everyone is so friendly here and my experience so far has been amazing. I have even joined a sports team, which I never thought I would do! Since starting at the University, I have made new friends who I believe will be my friends for life. What’s more, the support from the lecturers and Student Support has allowed me to reach my potential and push myself to do the best I can. I was nervous when I started and they helped me feel welcome. I really feel I have developed my confidence both socially and academically.

My career aim when I complete the BA (Hons) Childhood Studies degree is to become a primary school teacher.”
