I chose to study BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology with Integrated Foundation Year at the University of Sunderland for several reasons. Firstly, I was inspired by a close friend who studied here and shared their positive experience, praising the university’s supportive environment and high-quality teaching. This gave me confidence that Sunderland was the right place for my academic growth. Additionally, the university's location was a key factor in my decision. With my children attending a nearby junior school, the close proximity allowed me to manage my responsibilities as both a parent and a student effectively. Sunderland's flexible approach to learning made it easier for me to balance family life with my studies, ensuring that I could pursue my educational goals without compromising my responsibilities at home.
Before coming to university, I ran my own beauty business for several years. While I enjoyed that work, the loss of my mother made me reflect on my life and seek a new direction. I had always been fascinated by crime documentaries and intrigued by how the human mind works. This long-standing interest motivated me to pursue further education, where I could explore these subjects more deeply. Deciding to take this leap felt like the right step toward a new chapter in my life, blending my personal passions with academic growth.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the course has been the outstanding support and expertise of the staff, particularly in the forensic department. Their deep knowledge and passion for the subject have been truly inspiring. Whenever I had questions, no matter how complex, the staff provided clear, thoughtful, and insightful guidance, which helped me not only understand the material but also think critically and engage with the subject on a deeper level. What really stood out to me was their dedication to helping students grow, both academically and personally. The foundation year was particularly instrumental in setting a strong groundwork, allowing me to gradually build the confidence and skills needed for the more advanced years of study. Across the full four years of my experience, I found myself constantly learning, evolving, and gaining a greater appreciation for the intricacies of forensic psychology. Beyond the academic knowledge, the staff's mentorship has been invaluable. Their ability to connect theory to real-world applications and encourage independent thinking made a significant difference in how I approached the subject. The opportunity to be guided by such knowledgeable and passionate professionals has been an experience I will always treasure. It has not only expanded my academic abilities but also helped me grow as a person, giving me a newfound confidence and clarity about my future path.
My advice to prospective students is to make the most of the incredible support that the University of Sunderland offers. One thing that really stood out to me during my time here is how much the staff genuinely care about your success and future. Whether you’re struggling with your studies or just need guidance on your career path, there is always someone willing to help. Don’t hesitate to reach out when you need assistance—whether it’s academic or personal support, the resources are there, and the staff are always approachable and invested in your growth. If you’re willing to engage and make use of the opportunities available, you’ll find that Sunderland is a place where you can truly thrive. In my last year I felt fully supported during my final year project which was unbelievably beneficial to my academic growth.
Since graduating, I’ve continued to pursue my passion for psychology and am currently preparing to apply for a doctorate program in the field. I believe psychology is a subject where there’s always room to learn, evolve, and expand your understanding—it’s an area that offers lifelong growth. My ultimate goal is to deepen my expertise and contribute meaningfully to the field, whether that’s through research, practice, or a combination of both. I’m incredibly excited about the prospect of furthering my studies, as I find the complexities of human behaviour and the mind endlessly fascinating. Psychology is a field that fuels my curiosity, and I look forward to making a lasting impact as I continue my academic and professional journey.
Working in mental health, the knowledge I gained during my studies at the University of Sunderland has been incredibly valuable. The in-depth understanding of human behaviour and psychological theories I acquired has given me a much deeper appreciation of the complexities individuals face. This has allowed me to approach my work with greater empathy and insight, enabling me to support people more effectively in managing their mental health. The skills I developed, such as critical thinking and analysing behaviour, have been essential in helping me tailor my approach to meet each individual's unique needs, ultimately making me better at what I do.
If I could sum up my experience at the University of Sunderland, I would say it was truly transformative and one of the most rewarding chapters of my life. I absolutely loved my time there, and it was bittersweet when it came to an end. I had the privilege of meeting some amazing people—both fellow students and staff—who have had a lasting impact on me. The supportive community, engaging coursework, and personal growth I experienced made my journey at Sunderland unforgettable. It’s a place that not only shaped my academic path but also enriched my life in so many meaningful ways."
