Case Study

Caitlin Latimer

Newcastle Upon Tyne

BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology

Wanting to change professions, Caitlin Latimer applied to study at Sunderland to pursue her dream of making a difference in the world through psychology. After graduating with First Class Honours, she now works with children who have had adverse life experiences, and co-hosts a mental health podcast and coaching platform to help others.

I chose to study at the University of Sunderland as I wanted a career that I was passionate about. I chose the University of Sunderland as my first and only option, as this was the only university that offered BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology. However, I did my research before attending and the university came highly recommended.

Prior to attending university, I was a qualified beauty therapist and Thai massage therapist. I was always interested in psychology, and I wanted to make a difference in the world, somehow. When looking at courses, I thought what better than looking at adverse life experiences which may be causal factors as to why people commit crimes to try and prevent it.

My favourite part about the course I studied was everyone I met on the course. I had amazing tutors, lecturers, a fantastic supervisor, and I made great friends. Although I enjoyed the course material, the experiences I had at university were what made my time there amazing.

My advice to prospective students would be to do it! What are you waiting for? Sunderland university has staff members and students, especially in the psychology department that are so caring and understanding. They really do become the people that pull you through your degree. I am not sure I would have got that experience elsewhere.

My confidence and career have blossomed since graduating. I am currently a co-host of a podcast and coaching platform to help others through mental health with a good friend I met on the course. Something I never would have had the confidence to do without doing this course and pushing myself to complete uncomfortable tasks (presentations). I have just secured a job working in a trauma-informed school helping children who have had adverse life experiences, and I have just applied for a doctorate in clinical psychology.

The whole of my degree has helped me in the job I am currently in. I can inform other staff members and use my knowledge to help children who have experienced adverse childhoods and hopefully be the person that can support them to take a different path in life. The main thing my course taught me is that early intervention can change someone’s life.

To sum up my experience, I had the best educational experience of my life at this university. I gained friends for life. I gained confidence by being supported by staff members who took the time to get to know me and guide me through the difficult moments. I learned to believe in myself and trust my intelligence no matter what, as this university taught me, I was capable enough to achieve anything. I will forever be grateful to Will and Cath for their continued support throughout my undergrad.
