Before university, I took higher-level chemistry and biology in high school. I have always had an interest in the sciences, especially how our living systems function. As I gained a deeper understanding of medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, and diseases and their treatments, I knew I wanted to study these areas further. I found out about the University of Sunderland from a catalogue of schools in the UK offering biology, chemistry, pharmacy, and related courses. It was within a suitable price range and offered courses and modules I was interested in.
My favourite part of the course has been the lab sessions, especially the ones involving analytical tools. They are great learning experiences as we apply theory-based knowledge to practical work. Some of my favourite labs included synthesising drug compounds, where each method and process involved was explained and shown in detail. Methods of analysis were performed to show us the compounds’ properties, such as purity and identity. These lab classes only furthered my interests and kept me on track for my future goals.
To anyone looking to study at the University of Sunderland, don't hesitate to ask for help. Whether it is helping you understand a topic, clarification on an assignment, or even advice on improving your studying skills, there will be people there to support you. Being in a new environment may be intimidating, but the staff and lecturers have always been happy to assist in any way they can. When I first came to study here, I kept to myself, which only hindered my learning. Only after I gathered the courage to ask questions did I realise how easy it was and how my understanding improved. If you're anxious or nervous to ask questions, rest assured because no one will judge you for wanting to understand or know better."
