Before coming to university, I was passionate about the cosmetics industry and knew that formal education in cosmetic science would give me the expertise needed to excel in this field. I wanted to delve deeper into the formulation of personal care products and learn about cutting-edge advancements, which led me to pursue both my BSc and MSc in Cosmetic Science at the University of Sunderland.
I chose to study at Sunderland because of its specialised course in Cosmetic Science, which is recognised for blending both scientific and practical industry knowledge. The course offered a strong foundation in formulation and materials science, combined with opportunities for hands-on research.
My favourite part of the course was the practical application of formulation techniques and conducting groundbreaking research in skincare. Working on my thesis, "Dissolving Films for Skincare" and “Sustainable Shampoo Formulation with Reduced Water” gave me hands-on experience in developing innovative products. The opportunity to use tools like High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to ensure product safety and efficacy was incredibly fulfilling.
Since graduating, I am currently working as a Junior Chemist at Herrco Cosmetic & Medicals LTD, where I am honing my skills in formulating sulphate-free, paraben-free, and silicone-free products for leading brands. My experience in fragrance and skincare formulation is expanding, and my future career aim is to continue innovating in the cosmetics industry, particularly in sustainable and cutting-edge formulations. Previously, I had worked at The Fragrance Shop as a fragrance expert and training manager which has assisted me further with the understanding of consumer market trends and seasonal trends. The in-depth knowledge I gained about EU and Worldwide Regulations governing cosmetics has been crucial in ensuring compliance during product development. My experience with formulation techniques, such as those used in my research on dissolving films and sustainable shampoo, directly applies to my role in creating safe and effective products at Herrco. Additionally, the business and marketing skills I acquired have helped in understanding the commercial side of cosmetics and assisted me with my skill development at The Fragrance Shop.
My advice to prospective students would be to fully embrace the practical aspects of the course and take advantage of the University's industry connections. Sunderland offers a unique blend of academic theory and real-world application, so focus on your projects and research – they will be invaluable for your future career. Additionally, staying updated with the latest trends in dermatology, hair care, and cosmetics will give you a competitive edge.
I would sum up my experience as transformative and highly rewarding. The University of Sunderland provided me with both the technical skills and the industry insights needed to excel in the competitive world of cosmetic science. It was an environment where innovation and practical application were encouraged, allowing me to grow both academically and professionally. The tutors are supportive with new and innovative ideas for thesis.”
