BSc (Hons) Biopharmaceutical Science

Jack Bannister chose to study BSc (Hons) Biopharmaceutical Science at the University of Sunderland after attending an Open Day and being impressed by the enthusiasm of the staff. He applied for a placement between his second and third year and obtained a competitive placement at GlaxoSmithKline, which has prepared him for a career in pharmaceutical research and development.

I came to university straight after completing my A Levels to start my journey to becoming a scientist, learning to design and develop medicines. The BSc (Hons) Biopharmaceutical Science course is the best for what I wanted to do, and when I came to an Open Day the staff seemed to really know and care about what they are teaching. Coming to Sunderland just seemed like the obvious choice.

The nature of the course is unique and is focused on industry-specific content which will help me to make a difference in people's lives. My favourite part of the course is the biotechnology and organic synthesis aspects of it, it has really given me a taste of the kind of work that is done in Research and Development (R&D) and helped me see that is the career path I would like to pursue. I also enjoy the hands-on experience you get in the laboratories.

I would advise future students to make the most of the lecturers, they will help you in any way they can. Take advantage of the great social side university provides, especially clubs and societies. Work hard in the second year and apply for placement for as soon as you can. I obtained a competitive placement at GlaxoSmithKline and I am now far more confident in my scientific abilities and have a much greater chance in undertaking a funded PhD, which will stand me in good stead for a career in pharmaceutical R&D.

Studying at the University of Sunderland was a unique, life-changing experience."
