MSc Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Formulations

(MPharm) Pharmacy

Alex Hadjipour has always been interested in the field of pharmaceuticals and medicine. He chose to pursue this path at the University of Sunderland by first studying MPharm, then, after completing his pre-registration year and becoming a qualified pharmacist, studying for his master's in Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Formulations. He is currently working part-time as a pharmacist while pursuing a PhD in Formulation and Drug Delivery at Newcastle University.

Since childhood, I have been driven by a deep curiosity to explore and understand the world of medicines. Becoming an expert in the pharmaceutical field has been a long-standing passion of mine, and pursuing an MPharm degree, followed by an MSc in Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Science has allowed me to follow this passion. I chose to study at the University of Sunderland as it offers exceptional resources, modern facilities, and highly knowledgeable lecturers with extensive expertise in the field of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, all while allowing me to remain in my hometown throughout the duration of my studies.

My favourite areas of study were pharmaceutics, drug delivery, and formulation improvement, along with clinical pharmacy. I acquired various practical and theoretical skills, including the application of clinical knowledge in real-life patient-centred scenarios and laboratory-based expertise. But the fundamental understanding of the underlying scientific principles and the practical proficiency in utilising diverse pharmaceutical analytical instruments have proven most beneficial in my current role as a PhD researcher.

Since my graduation and pre-registration year, I have taken on various roles as a pharmacist. Currently, I work part-time as a pharmacist while pursuing a PhD in Formulation and Drug Delivery at Newcastle University, participating in a project in the field of rare disease management (Cystinosis) jointly funded by Action Medical Research and LifeArc. My long-term career goal is to pursue a path in academia and research.

To future students I would recommend fully embracing the exceptional opportunities offered by the University of Sunderland. It fosters a professional and welcoming environment, enabling students to acquire transformative skills while enjoying their academic journey. Additionally, it provides access to invaluable resources across various disciplines, enhancing the learning experience. The University's strong connections with a diverse range of employers also offer an impressive platform for launching successful future careers. My experience was highly rewarding, characterised by a professional and welcoming environment that fosters academic and personal growth. The opportunity to engage with highly skilled lecturers, whose expertise and support were invaluable, significantly enhanced my learning experience."
