Rob Armstrong

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science Practice Degree Apprenticeship

Because of the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science Practice Degree Apprenticeship, Rob Armstrong was able to complete IBMS registration portfolio that allowed him to become a registered biomedical scientist with the HCPC.

After I completed the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science Practice Degree Apprenticeship, I have been successful in securing a Band 5 role at the University Hospital for North Durham where I trained during my apprenticeship, meaning I am now a practising biomedical scientist. Becoming qualified and registered as a Biomedical Scientist has allowed me to progress in my career.

I wanted to complete this apprenticeship as it allowed me to study whilst at work. I was given time off by my department to go to University to attend lectures and labs. I was also given time at work to study and develop my workplace skills. The course has been great because the structure allows students to have a good work/life balance and not get overwhelmed.

I am also pleased because I took my Year 3 research project to the IBMS conference, where I presented it with my employer Robert Usher, and we won!

The most enjoyable part of my apprenticeship was working with colleagues from other departments within the trust and from other trusts. It allowed me to make good professional relationships with other colleagues and create a good support network whilst I studied”
