Case Study

Thomas Gilling

BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Thomas Gilling decided to study Engineering at the University of Sunderland because we offered the best support for those in full-time work. Ater graduation, Thomas hopes to move into an Engineers role at Caterpillar, where he currently works.

I chose to study at Sunderland because it offered the best support for those who want to study an Engineering degree full time whilst also working full time. This gave me more confidence to progress after completing my HNC onto a BEng. Furthermore, the facilities that were shown on the tour of the University were useful and relatable to my engineering job at Caterpillar.

Before university, I had completed a Level 3 and HNC over a four-year apprenticeship. I attended a college for those qualifications, I wanted to further my studies and experience of studying at university.

The course allows me the opportunity to learn in-depth about more advanced technology and automation such as PLC’s. This gives me vital knowledge which I would use at Caterpillar and the new skills I would practice in the Maintenance department. Moreover, each lecture will use real-life examples so, therefore, is practical to each individual role in engineering.

I have not yet graduated but at the end of the two years of this degree, I hope to move into an Engineers role in Caterpillar where I will lead larger projects within the company. Although I have only started the University this year, the support services have been easy to use and made it easy to settle in. For example, a lot of research is needed to be done for my engineering degree so it is important to have access to computers throughout the day.

I would definitely recommend the University of Sunderland to other students, whether it is to do engineering or other subjects the University offers. I would advise any student to come to Sunderland as it is extremely supportive for anyone looking for a secure pathway and also achieving a goal. My experience has opened my eyes to the scope of engineering and its impact on the world."
