PGCE Early Years Teaching (DL)

Silvia Bartoccioni was working at an international school in Tokyo, Japan, and decided to pursue the PGCE Early Years Teaching course at Sunderland as the distance learning aspect meant she didn’t have to move – or compromise on quality. She is due to graduate soon and already has a job offer as a classroom teacher.

I was working as a second teacher for an international school in Tokyo, Japan, which I was very passionate about, so decided to further my knowledge of education and get a certificate to then be able to lead my own class. Since I currently live in Japan, when I decided to get my certification in Early Years Teaching, I was looking for a distance learning course that would not require me to relocate, without compromising on quality. The University of Sunderland was the best option in this sense. The best aspect of the course is the focus on learning through experience by completing multiple teaching practice modules.

I would advise other students taking this route to organise your time effectively, especially if you are simultaneously working full-time. You will have to put in a lot of time and energy, but it’s definitely worth it!

My career is progressing even though I haven’t graduated yet – my school has already offered me a full-time teaching job for next year. I would definitely recommend the University of Sunderland to other students – it has been challenging at times, but extremely gratifying!”
