I knew from a young age that I wanted to attend university to get a degree and be the first in my family to do so. I wanted to show our future generations that we can do whatever we set our minds to. After completing my undergraduate degree at a different university, I decided to take a year out from studying to work as a carer in the local community, which I absolutely love, and still do when I can. In September 2023, I started the PGCE Secondary Education in Mathematics course.
I chose to study for my PGCE at Sunderland as I wanted to attend a university that was close to home, but also one that was highly ranked for its teacher training courses. I’d heard nothing but good reviews regarding Sunderland's reputation for its Education courses and carrying out my own research supported all the positive things I’d heard from friends and family. My interview on campus further confirmed this as every person I met was welcoming from start to finish, so I knew I’d made the right decision.
I’ve made lifelong friends on my course who I met through the weekly lectures and subject sessions. Placement weeks could often feel challenging, so it was great having friends going through the same experience – we were always comforting each other and chatting on an evening to let off steam together! My lecturers, personal academic tutor, and other staff members I met have all been incredible. They’re there for you every step of the way and will do anything they can to make sure you have the best possible experience and enjoy it too.
I was also nominated as course rep, which was great, as it meant I could support some of my peers during stressful times. I left my full-time job to complete my PGCE, so receiving the teacher training bursary has been a fantastic help too as it meant I didn’t have to worry about money during my studying.
I’m now working as a full-time maths teacher in a local secondary school, a role which I secured at the end of my first placement. I’m putting everything I learnt during my PGCE into practice and I’m now able to discover my own teaching style while still being mentored in school. I’m also continuing my studies at the University of Sunderland, enrolling on the part-time MA Education course.
If you’re thinking of coming to study at Sunderland, all I can say is go for it! Grab every opportunity with both hands and you’ll soar. I’ve grown not only as a teacher but as an individual this year, and I’ve made friends and colleagues for life. Going to university can be nerve-racking, whether you’re living at home or moving away, but some of my happiest memories have been at Sunderland. It goes without saying that there’ll be ups and downs, but you’ll never know if it’s for you if you don’t give it a try. It must be good if I’m already coming back to study for my master’s degree!”
