Case Study

When I finished sixth form and went to a different university, I quickly realised that the course wasn’t right for me and left within weeks of starting. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what career path I wanted to follow. It was volunteering in a local school that helped me realise I wanted to go back to university and study to become a teacher. 

I wanted to study in the North East and stay close to home, so I applied to both Sunderland and Northumbria, and attended an interview at both universities. From attending the interviews, I knew I wanted to come to Sunderland because the staff were so friendly and the course was more appealing.

The best aspect of the course is the support from the staff when it comes to assignments. In my first year, I struggled a bit due to being out of education for almost a year. I received so much help and support from my lecturers and had a one-to-one meeting with them that allowed me to refresh and develop my academic writing skills.

I would definitely recommend Sunderland to other students because it’s such a friendly and supportive place to study. I would also advise that prospective students visit the University before making their final decision. Everyone has different preferences on what they want to get out of their university experience and open days really help in getting a good feel for Sunderland.

I’m currently working as a supply teaching assistant, but once I’ve graduated, I hope to get a full-time teaching role in a school in the North East.
