I previously worked as a bank manager but didn't enjoy my role as there was very little opportunity for progression or to learn new things. As part of my role, I supported customers who had been victim to financial fraud, and this sparked an interest in tech and cybersecurity.
I attended an Open Day at the University of Sunderland and was impressed with the computer science facilities and the fact that the tutors were approachable, friendly, and knowledgeable.
My favourite part of the course was the networking modules, they were always challenging but the tutor was supportive.
I met my current employer while attending a careers fair organised by the University. They kept in touch with me throughout my course and offered me a role when I graduated in 2021. I spent two years as a cybersecurity analyst and engineer which included developing our Security Operations Centre (SOC) which provides 24/7 cybersecurity monitoring to our customers. At the beginning of 2024 we were ready to launch and I was promoted to SOC Manager. My role is very varied and I am always learning, I’m always looking to improve our capabilities. My goal is to be head of Security Operations in the next five years. The ability to research has been the biggest thing that has helped me in my role. Working in cybersecurity means keeping up to date with the latest threats and technology. Every day I have to quickly be able to grasp new concepts, implement new technologies and be able to confidently explain them to customers.
My advice to future students is to attend open days and talk to the tutors to find out what the course content will be, check if that aligns with your career goals. Also consider the other opportunities the University can offer such as sandwich years or summer placements with local employers.
I really enjoyed my time at university. The course taught me a lot of fundamental skills that I use every day in my current role. Graduating with a first-class honours gave me the confidence to apply for jobs and hit the ground running in my graduate role.
I went to university as a mature student and it was the best thing I have ever done. I am now in a role I love, each day is different, I am always learning and have an exciting career ahead."
