MSc Human Resource Management

Leanne Hunter had previously pursued midwifery, but health issues meant she had to change career paths. After trying various office jobs, she quickly realised the importance of HR and how there was a significant gap in organisations for supporting disabled employees. Leanne set off to make the world of work a better place and began studying MSc Human Resource Management.

The support and friendly approach to students was huge in my decision of choosing Sunderland. I knew people who had studied here and they spoke really highly of the supportive culture. The University has a very good reputation, it's in a great location and has an excellent value for money too. I'd looked at other universities and it was a great deal cheaper to study here, meaning I had a lot of spare money to support my living conditions than if I studied anywhere else.

In a previous life I had pursued midwifery, but health issues meant I had to change my career path. I tried various office jobs and quickly realized the importance of a HR function and how important it was for disabled employees to have knowledgeable HR departments. After seeing both good and bad practice, I realised that this was my vocation and I set off on a mission to make the world of work a better place for disabled employees. I pursued education to accompany my lived experience, so I could be the most knowledgeable HR practitioner I can be.

My favourite part of the course was that the class was largely made up of international students. It was a very enriching experience to make friends from all over the world and learn about different cultures. I made some friends for life, but it also assisted me massively in my confidence to support employees who aren't native to the UK. I understand more about cultural differences, value systems, and the hurdles a diverse workforce can face, as we are all individuals. It opened up a new perspective for me, that I wouldn't have had if I didn't study this course.

My advice to prospective students would be to just go for it! The University is like a family, you won't regret it. They supported me through some of my most difficult times in life and I can't thank them enough for that. Deteriorating health conditions and chronic fatigue meant I was unable to get out of bed for a large part of my studies. The University, including the Wellbeing and Disability Team went above and beyond for me, enabling me to complete my master's degree. I can't thank them enough for this.

Studying MSc Human Resource Management has helped me become more specific in my job search. I've just applied for a new position, as I now have the knowledge to get me where I really want to be. Helping other disabled people is my passion and I want to enable them to thrive in the workplace. I also intend on coming back to Sunderland to do my PhD after taking some time out of studying, watch this space!
