Starting university is an exciting new chapter, and Freshers' Week is the perfect way to kick off your university journey. If you’re wondering what to expect, this guide covers everything you need to know about Freshers' Week, and how to make the most of it.

What is Freshers' Week?

Freshers' Week, also known as Welcome Week, is the first week of university before teaching begins. It’s designed to help you settle into university life, with a variety of fun activities that aim to introduce you to the campus, the city, and the student community.

When is Freshers' Week?

Freshers' Week at Sunderland begins on 15 Sep 2025 and ends 19 Sep 2025.

Is Freshers' Week worth it?

Absolutely! Freshers' Week is an incredible opportunity to meet new people, try new activities and get settled into your new home. To make sure you make the most of Freshers, we’ve put together a guide of the most important parts of Freshers.

What to do during Freshers' Week

1. Attend Freshers' Fair

One of the best ways to kickstart your Freshers Week is by attending the Freshers' Fair, which is held in our Sports Hall at Cityspace on City Campus.

You can sign up for societies and meet local businesses that may be offering discounts or freebies for students. You can also get involved with our sport and exercise clubs through Team Sunderland.

Be sure to visit the Students’ Union (SU) stalls to learn about all the student services and get involved in events happening on campus.

2. Make friends

Freshers' Week is the perfect time to meet new people, from those living in your accommodation, on your course, or from people with shared interests you may meet in societies. We have some great tips to help you make friends at University.

During Freshers, you can take part in social events, from day trips to movie nights, and start building your social circle. You’ll meet students from different backgrounds, which could lead to friendships that last throughout your university life.

Our SU also offers a buddy scheme where you'll be paired with an experienced student who can help to guide you.

3. Move in

If you’re living in university accommodation, Freshers' Week will likely coincide with your move-in date. Use this time to get comfortable in your new space, meet your housemates, and start making your room feel like home. We have guaranteed accommodation for first year students who meet our criteria.

If you've chosen to stay at home during university, you could reinvent your space to make, such as making sure you have a desk to complete your assignments at!

4. Explore the area

If you’re new to the city, Freshers' Week is also the perfect time to move into your new surroundings. In Sunderland, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful coastal views and vibrant city life, so take advantage of your free time before learning begins to get to know your new home.

We have a great guide on living in Sunderland as a student, as well as the best things to do in Sunderland. Sunderland is also one of the cheapest cities to live in within the UK, and we have information on the cost of living to help you budget.

If you're a foodie, we also have the five must try local Sunderland dishes, as well as how to food shop as a student.

"From the moment I arrived at my accommodation, to the beginning of my actual first week I felt welcomed and informed about everything that was going on around the university and in the city as well."

Kristina Filkova, BSc (Hons) Tourism Management

5. International students

For international students, Freshers' Week is especially important, as it's an opportunity to meet others who may also be adjusting to life in a new country.

As well as information for our international students, we also have a dedicated International Student Support team (ISS) who are happy to help you with any query. We also have community, cultural and faith and belief based societies as part of our Students' Union you can join.

6. Apply for jobs

Many students choose to work part-time during university, and Freshers' Week is a great time to start looking for job opportunities. We have some great tips on how to get part-time work as a student.

Many local businesses and on-campus employers will be recruiting during Freshers, so take the time to apply and find a role that fits your schedule. In October, we host a Student Jobs and Volunteering Fair which can help you to find employment.

7. Find out about support services

University isn’t just about academics and socialising, as it’s also about wellbeing. Freshers' Week is an ideal time to learn about the support services available to you, such as wellbeing, library services, and student financial guidance.

These resources can be invaluable throughout your university journey, so make sure you know where to turn if you need help.

Final thoughts

Freshers' Week is a whirlwind of activity, and it’s all about making the most of your new university life. Whether you're exploring Sunderland, meeting new friends, or learning about all the exciting opportunities available at your university, it’s a time to settle into your new routine. Make the most of this week, as it’s the perfect foundation for the rest of your university experience.
