Health Sciences and Nursing

Our Health Sciences and Nursing research is dynamic and multidisciplinary, and aims to address global healthcare priorities and improve health outcomes.

We focus on the development of interventions and technology for use in healthcare and delivery of health services innovation. Working with partners in industry, academia, a broad range of health and care service providers, patients, carers, and the public, we aim to create research impact by promoting knowledge exchange and influencing policy and practice.

We actively support research career development and have a successful research degree programme. We welcome applications from prospective postgraduate research students, as well as candidates for a Higher or Professional Doctorate.

Research areas

Drug Discovery and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Our research in drug discovery and pharmaceutical sciences aims to translate fundamental science into novel biomarkers or pharmaceutical interventions for the diagnosis and treatment of human disease. Our research within molecular and cellular biology, analytical and medicinal chemistry, and pharmaceutics, has attracted funding from a range of charities, the Medical Research Council, Innovate UK, and industry.

Health Services and Health Inequalities

Our health services research, along with health inequalities research, draws on expertise from allied health professions, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy, to inform an evidence base for decision-making in policy and practice.

We have strong links with NHS and care organisations, patient and service user groups.

Our research has attracted funding from the Academic Health Science Network (AHSN), research councils, the National Institute for Health Research and commercial organisations.

Exercise, Sport and Rehabilitative Therapies

Our Exercise, Sport and Rehabilitative Therapies (ERST) research aims to undertake theoretical and applied research across sport performance, health and rehabilitation, and education. The ERST group works within the Helen McArdle Nursing and Care Research Institute.

The research is underpinned by the interdisciplinary application of practice to develop a greater understanding of current issues in exercise, health, sport, physical education, and rehabilitation therapies, providing practical tools to enhance performance and health-related outcomes across sport teams, health services, and educational institutions.
