Who we are

Main convenors - Dr Donna Peacock and Prof Gary Shaw 

Dr Donna Peacock is a Principal Lecturer in Social Studies and Team Leader of the Social Studies team within the School of Social Sciences

Donna's doctoral thesis was entitled "From Underground Hacking to Ethical hacking" a Critical Realist approach is taken in applying a Bounded Rational Model in order to understand criminal involvement, persistence and desistance within the area of CyberCrime.

More recently she studied the impact of gender in Cybersecurity with Professor Alastair Irons. Donna is currently researching Vulnerable Adults in Police Custody and the support afforded to them by Appropriate Adults with Dr Faye Cosgrove.

Donna is also the Scheme Manager for Northumbria Local Appropriate Adult Scheme (NLAAS) which works to support vulnerable offenders in police custody.

 

Prof Gary Shaw is a Professor of Professional Practice in the Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism.

Gary is a former police officer with over 40 years of experience primarily within the area of major crime investigation. In 1977, he joined Northumbria Police and retired on national secondment as a Detective Chief Inspector in 2007. Gary then continued as a national lead for the National Strategic Steering Group on Investigative Interviewing until he took up his post at the University. Recently he has become interested in the development of research concerning the interviewing of vulnerable victims, witnesses and suspects concerning major crime investigation.
