The University of Sunderland will host its first-ever sustainability week that aims to inspire students, staff and the local community to take positive action towards a sustainable future.
Sustainability Week (6-10 May) will feature a range of workshops, talks, seminars and events spotlighting sustainable topics including biodiversity, reducing waste, low-carbon technology and much more.
The week will also include two sustainability fairs (6 & 8 May) across the University’s campuses celebrating the work of local businesses, student societies, and community organisations dedicated to a sustainable future.
Stalls at the fair will include a whole host of eco-friendly products by local vendors and a range of organisations showcasing their green initiatives – all open to the public
Laura Middlemass, Sustainability Manager at the University, said: “We are very proud to be driving action through our sustainability strategy and have made significant progress towards achieving our goals over the last 12 to 18 months.
“Our first Sustainability Week is part of a programme to support our community to live and learn more sustainably, as well as an opportunity to showcase some of our academic expertise in the field and share that knowledge with a diverse audience.”
During the week, Guests can also enjoy a whole range of seminars which will feature university experts and community leaders exploring various subjects including sustainable business practices, biodiversity and sustainable manufacturing.

For one of the seminars, Dr Nida Naveed, Senior Lecturer and Vice-Chancellor’s Research Fellow at the University, will share her expertise in sustainable manufacturing. Dr Naveed said: “These seminars are both timely and essential, offering a platform to address some of the most pressing challenges facing society today, particularly around sustainability and responsible innovation. “As the demand for greener technologies and circular practices grows, these events provide a space for researchers, industry professionals, and students to share ideas, explore solutions, and inspire action. Guests can expect thought-provoking presentations that bridge theory and practice, covering diverse aspects of sustainability across sectors. “Guests also will gain insight into the research being conducted at the University and into innovative practices that align with circular economy goals and sustainable manufacturing principles. “In my seminar, I will present a research-based exploration into how Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing (MMAM) can be leveraged to enhance both the mechanical performance and environmental sustainability of 3D printed components.” Find out more about what’s on at the University’s Sustainability Week and book your place here: go.sunderland.ac.uk/sustainability
