The University of Sunderland has announced a series of senior leadership changes as it reinforces its commitment to academic excellence, student success, and professional development.

Reflecting its pledge to deliver world-class education to students on its Sunderland, London, and Hong Kong campuses, as well as in institutions and places across the world, the University has appointed Professor Helen Driscoll as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education.

Effective from 1 June 2025, Professor Driscoll will move into the role following the pending departure of Professor Michael Young who becomes Vice-Chancellor at Edge Hill University in the summer.

Professor Driscoll said: "Having started my journey at the University as a Visiting Lecturer, I have seen first-hand the incredible progress we have made.

“I look forward to building on our achievements, working with colleagues across the University to provide life-changing opportunities for our students locally, nationally, and internationally.”

Further to Professor Driscoll’s appointment, the University has also announced that current Chief Operating Officer, Andrea Walters, will deputise, when needed, in the absence of Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Sir David Bell.

She said: “It is a privilege to support the University’s purpose and ambitions, and I will continue to do so with an unwavering commitment to ensuring our students and staff are proud of our institution.”

Completing the triple appointments is Dr Christina Edgar, current Director of Student Journey, who has been named Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Journey.

The changes aim to not only strengthen the University’s leadership team but also highlight Sunderland’s reputation for nurturing talent, with both Professor Michael Young and Professor Jon Timmis – previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor Commercial –going on to become vice-chancellors at other UK universities.

Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive at the University, added: "These appointments reflect our ability to identify and develop outstanding leaders as we give greater responsibilities to three of our most talented individuals. At the same time, we will be ensuring the continued success of the University and the delivery of world-class education to our students wherever they are located."
