The University of Sunderland has been recognised by a scheme that aims to implement international environmental standards for universities, colleges and other institutions.
After receiving the EcoCampus Bronze Award last year, the University has now achieved Silver status for its continued efforts to implement its sustainability performance.
To achieve this award, the University has undergone an audit to prove that its environmental risks are well managed, and action is being taken to minimise them.
Keith Slater, Head of Environmental Sustainability at the University, said: “To achieve EcoCampus Silver in less than a year is a great achievement for the University, and another example of how we can improve the Environmental Sustainability of the University when we work together.
“I would like to thank everyone who has helped us achieve this, and I am sure with all the support we have the University will achieve Gold standard in due course.”
Over the last academic year, the University has taken a range of measures including improving energy efficiencies across its campuses, embedding green skills in curriculum and launching initiatives for staff and students to make sustainable choices to further its environmental goals.
Achieving the EcoCampus accreditation is a significant step for the University’s environmental sustainability plan that looks at a range of ways to help minimise environmental impact from energy consumption to procurement.
