Staff from across the University of Sunderland have taken up the challenge of running 10km to raise money to unlock opportunities for students.

Once again, staff are taking part in the Sunderland City Run (11 May) to raise money for the University’s Futures Fund, which provides financial support for students to develop their careers and aspirations.

Starting outside of City Hall, the 10km will take runners across Sunderland including Roker Park, the city centre and the University’s St. Peter’s Campus.

Ashley Cave, Mental Health Advisor at the University, said: “I love running anyway, I find that it's great for not just your physical health, but also your mental health.

“I thought it was a great opportunity to get involved and raise money for the Futures Fund, which helps give so many of our students the opportunity to grow and learn.”

Ben Hodgson, Student Journey’s Head of Engagement and Projects at the University, said: “I had already been planning to take part in the Sunderland City 10k Run and was delighted to sign up for the University Futures Fund.

“The Sunderland runs are always great events and provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase the city, its surroundings and its services. It’s a perfect chance to represent the University while also helping to raise funds to support a great initiative that will help the City continue to thrive in the years to come.”

Since 2003, the Futures Fund has empowered students, staff and alumni to unlock opportunities, boost their employability and support excellence through a range of scholarships.

Georgie Cox, Head of Alumni and Development at the University, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to all our runners—their dedication is vital to the Futures Fund’s mission.

“This year alone, we’ve raised nearly £50,000 over multiple fundraising drives, all of which goes directly to supporting our students with essential living costs, internships, international placements, and even launching their own businesses.

“Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’re able to ensure that talent and determination—not financial circumstances—shape our students’ futures. Every pound raised truly makes a difference.”
