The University of Sunderland has been named University of the Year for Student Support in the new Daily Mail University Guide 2025.
The accolade follows Sunderland being shortlisted as University of the Year in this year’s THE (Times Higher Education) Awards.
Alastair McCall, editor of the Daily Mail University Guide, explains why the University has been singled out for its high levels of outstanding wellbeing and care offered to students.
“Students rate their experience at Sunderland. This year’s National Student Survey (NSS) results saw the University rank in the UK top 10 in a Daily Mail analysis of the results across all three key areas of assessment – an outstanding achievement – covering teaching excellence, student experience and student support.
“Success in the latter is especially hard to pull off but Sunderland achieves it in some style. The University opens up higher education to many students who might not get the chance elsewhere. With an elaborate support infrastructure, Sunderland doesn’t just keep these and all other students on track, it sets them up for success in their subsequent careers.
“Its Centre for Graduate Prospects caught the judges’ eyes. By integrating work-based learning into most courses, students leave ready to make an instant impact in the workplace. Mentors, student development coaches and regular engagement with private and public sector employers all play a part in students’ ultimate success.
“Well-targeted financial support in the form of credits has to be redeemed on books, course materials and other studying costs. A huge amount of thought has gone into the support network for students at Sunderland putting the University top of the class and making it the Daily Mail University of the Year for Student Support.”
