Tell us a little bit about your current job in the film/TV/media industry and what it involved day to day.

As Head of Media, I mentor students in marketing, video production and photography. My role involves both conducting hands-on workshops and teaching theory to ensure students are well-prepared for their exams. I help them gain real-world experience through practical projects, which they really enjoy, while also guiding them through the academic side of media production. Here is some behind the scenes from my apprentices: https://vimeo.com/808728330/b1fd240b0e

What is the best thing about your current job?

The best part is mentoring students and seeing their growth through a combination of practical workshops and theoretical learning. It’s rewarding to watch them apply what they’ve learned and succeed in their exams. I also enjoy crafting and overseeing the marketing strategy for the company.

How do you think your course at the University of Sunderland has helped you move into your chosen career?

The course offered a great balance of practical skills and theory, both of which I now teach in my own work. I paid close attention to how my lecturers approached teaching during my three years at Sunderland, and their methods continue to inspire me today. The collaborative environment also helped me develop essential leadership skills, which have been invaluable in my current role. I also benefitted greatly from the University’s support through the Enterprise Place / Digital Incubator, which helps students kick-start their business ideas with access to mentors and workshops.

What made you choose the University of Sunderland?

Back in 2018 when I applied, the University of Sunderland was ranked fifth in the country for Film Production, and they offered a highly regarded course with excellent practical learning opportunities. It gave me the chance to develop my skills through real projects, which was exactly what I was looking for. In my final year, the University went on to achieve first place for the best Film Production course, which is a testament to the quality of education they provide.

What did you enjoy most about your time at the University of Sunderland - and what did you enjoy least?

I enjoyed the hands-on, practical learning the most. Working on real projects with fellow students and using professional equipment was invaluable. The aspect I enjoyed least was the pressure of deadlines, but it taught me how to handle the fast pace of the media industry.

Are you excited about the future of film/TV/media in Sunderland and the north-east?

Absolutely. Even though I’m far away from Sunderland, I’ve been keeping a close eye on what’s happening in the city, especially with the upcoming Crown Works Studios. Once completed, this development will have a major impact on the north-east film production scene, and it will be a must for anyone looking to be part of the City of Sunderland's growing creative industry. I’m excited to see how this will shape the future of media in the region.

What are your hopes for the future in terms of your career?

Now that I’m a father, I’m taking some time to enjoy life with my seven-month-old daughter and focusing on my family. I have a few complex business ideas in the back of my mind, but I’ll see where the future takes me.

How did your University experience change you?

It gave me the confidence to take on leadership roles and taught me how to guide others. The practical, collaborative experience helped shape how I approach teaching and film production today. On a personal note, it also gave me another life-changing opportunity – I met my fiancé during my time at the University of Sunderland.

Finally, who are your dream three film stars to have in one of your productions and why?

It would have to be Pedro Pascal because of his ability to embody complex characters with incredible depth is something I admire. Aitana Sánchez-Gijón because of her powerful performances and emotional range would add great depth to any project, and last but not least, Florence Pugh. She’s incredibly versatile and brings raw talent to every role, making her a standout in the industry.

In the subject rankings, the Guardian University Guide 2025 has placed the University of Sunderland fifth for Film Production in the UK.
