Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson has released a statement affirming that the UK will continue to welcome international students from around the world to its universities.

The Houghton and Sunderland South MP emphasised that the UK values the contribution that international students make to the country and highlighted the opportunities they have when choosing to study here.

Ms Phillipson said: "My passion is for a Britain that looks outwards in optimism. A Britain that builds bridges of friendship with other nations. A Britain that values the contribution of international students.

"I have a message for you: if you meet the criteria for entry to a UK university and for entering the UK on a student visa, the British government and British people will welcome you."

International students who choose to study in the UK have the opportunity once graduating from an eligible course to remain in the country on a graduate visa for two years or three years when completing a PhD.
