Staff and Students across the University of Sunderland have come together to clear up its campuses.
Volunteers took part in a litter-picking initiative alongside Suez, the University’s recycling and waste contractor, to make Sunderland greener and cleaner.
Over the two hours, volunteers made their way down the riverside, clearing litter and keeping the University’s campus and surrounding area clean.
This was part of an ongoing litter-picking initiative, with volunteers previously cleaning up the University’s City campus and surrounding area.
The sessions lasted for two hours and provided the opportunity to walk around the local community and meet like-minded individuals who were volunteering their time.
Everyone who took part in the litter pick had the opportunity to claim BetterPoints via an app which incentivises University of Sunderland staff and students to take sustainable modes of travel.
Cristina Correa Segade, a Computer Systems Engineering student, said: "I took part because I believe it’s important to help maintain and improve our local environment, and I enjoyed being part of a team making a difference in the community. It was also a great opportunity to meet new people and work together for a good cause.
"I’ve recently started using the BetterPoints app, and I’m really grateful for the 5,000 points we received - I didn’t realise we’d be getting them, so it was a lovely surprise.”
Fareedah Abdurrahman, a MA Marketing student, shares “The community litter pick was fun. Firstly, I took part in this event to experience something new as I had never done community litter pickup before. "Secondly I did it to help keep the city of Sunderland clean, especially for passersby, and the third reason was to meet people from different cultures and lastly, is stay active. The event exceeded my expectations and if possible, I would love to attend the next one.” This event was organised by the University’s sustainability team which aims to promote green and environmentally conscious initiatives across both its estates and courses. Laura Kerry, Sustainability Officer at the University, said: "Together, we’re cleaning up our community. With the combined efforts of University of Sunderland staff, students, and SUEZ Waste Management Services, we're not just picking up litter—we're making a difference. “Every small action helps to create a cleaner, greener future for the areas around our campuses.” Due to its success, the University in partnership with Groundworks will organise monthly litter picks for staff and students to help keep Sunderland green.
