The University of Sunderland has retained a prestigious award celebrating the support and development of world-class research at the institution.
HR Excellence in Research, issued by an academic review panel, the European Commission, and Vitae, commended the University’s work in areas such as recruiting and retaining high potential researchers, recognising and valuing researchers and their development, and ensuring they are supported in a global research environment.
Dr Andy Dixon, University of Chichester and member of the UK panel, said: "It is good to see the level of commitment from institutions submitting for the various stages of the Award and the quality of submissions at all levels has been strong."
The award is based on the University of Sunderland’s two year progress report which has been updated with new action plans to ensure the important work in valuing research is continuing in the future.
Andrea Walters, Director of Human Resources at the University of Sunderland, added: "The University is focused on continuing to provide a stimulating and rewarding work environment for all our researchers, in which they have access to opportunities for professional development and career progression.

The 2015 UK panel for the HR Excellence in Research Award consisted of:
- Dr Irmela Brach, Policy Officer at the European Commission.
- Dr Anastasia Callaghan, member of the UK Research Staff Association.
- Dr Andy Dixon, Director of Research, University of Chichester and member of the Concordat Strategy Group.
- Mr Guy Gregory, HR Director, University of Bristol and member of the Concordat Strategy Group.
- Professor Trevor McMillan, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost, Keele University and member of the Concordat Strategy Group.
- Dr Janet Metcalfe, Chair and Head, Vitae and on behalf of the Concordat Strategy Group.
