Writers of all ages from across the fuelled up their imaginations and put pen to paper for an annual short story competition on Wearside.
The University of Sunderland in association with Waterstones, once again joined forces to host the Short Story Award 2018, an event which grows in popularity year on year, honouring dozens of wonderful writers and stories.
Taking place at Waterstones in the Bridges Sunderland, helping choose this year’s winners was Professor Ailsa Cox from Edge Hill University, the first Professor of Short Fiction in the world.
University of Sunderland’s Head of Culture, Steve Watts, said: “Thank you to all the entrants and everyone who took the time to be interested in our competition. This is the second year we’ve hosted this event and each year the quality of entries continues to impress, with a huge range of stories that entertained and moved us.”
Sunderland University lecturer Dr Sarah Dobbs, who convened the competition, said: “We are also hugely thankful to the support from our judges and Waterstones for allowing us to host the awards event in Cafe W and for providing some of the prizes, as well as the continued support of the City’s Library Services.
This year’s awards included Prizes for the 11-17 category, as well as the adult category.
The event was also attended by Bandit Fiction, who will be publishing special edition print runs of shortlisted and winning entries.
