The University of Sunderland has been awarded 5-star Clean Green Ceramics Sustainability Certification - making Sunderland the only university in the UK to be awarded Clean Green Certification for ceramics.
The University scored 82% in its Sustainability and Environmental Management policy and activities and has been awarded a maximum 5 stars.
Professor of Ceramics Andrew Livingstone worked with colleagues over the summer to attain 5-star certification. He said: “We are delighted to have been awarded a 5-star certification for clean green ceramics and to be recognised as a leader in the domain of sustainability.
“We are the first and only University in the UK to gain accreditation that demonstrates best professional practices in environmental management and sustainable employment. Sustainability is embedded within our teaching and studio/workshop practice and this is testament to our 5 star certification.
“As a department we aim to continue to develop sustainable approaches and share good practice within the faculty and wider University.”
Dr Wendy Gers, independent curator and founder of Clean Green Ceramics, said: “The Ceramics Department of the University of Sunderland is a leader in the domain of sustainability, with established waste management and procurement systems as well as other programs and systems that constitute best professional practices in environmental management and sustainable employment.”
Professor Arabella Plouviez, Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries, at the University of Sunderland, said: “Being recognised through the Clean Green Ceramics certification at the University is a significant achievement that reflects our academics’ dedication to sustainable practices and innovation in the field.
“This serves as a testament to the ongoing efforts to create eco-friendly solutions within ceramics and to further enhance our department, contributing meaningfully to both the ceramic practice and the broader global sustainability goals.”
