The University of Sunderland’s global reputation has once again been strengthened in the latest edition of the world’s most-consulted university ranking.
The 2023 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, sees the University’s best performance in Hospitality and Leisure Management, in which it ranks 101-150 globally and 11th in United Kingdom.
The rankings, released by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, names the world’s best universities for the study of 54 academic disciplines.
The rankings provide authoritative comparative analysis of the performance of 15,703 individual university programs at 1,594 universities in 93 locations around the world across 54 academic disciplines and five broad Faculty Areas.
This is the second year in a row that Sunderland’s Hospitality and Leisure Management, covering tourism, hospitality, events, and aviation, has been placed in the world subject rankings.
Professor Lawrence Bellamy, Academic Dean for the Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism at the University of Sunderland, said: “The QS World Rankings recognise academic excellence as judged by peers and significant stakeholders across the world. Once again, the work of our colleagues in Tourism (under the Hospitality and Leisure Management category) has been ranked as outstanding, one of the best institutions for this discipline in the world.
“For those that know us well, then this should be of no surprise, but for those that are not familiar with our work then this accolade provides an indication of the quality of our provision, which is exceptional.”
The QS ranking comes on the back of a successful few years for the University. For the first time ever, Sunderland made it into the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023. The University was ranked between 1,001-1,200 out of 1,799 Institutions across the world. The University scored particularly well in the International Outlook category, ranked 347th out of all global universities.
International students from over 100 countries are currently represented at the University, which is also the only Higher Education Institution in the UK with its own campus in Hong Kong.
The result also comes after the University was ranked number 50th in the Guardian University Guide 2023 - a rise of 42 places compared to the previous year.
And in 2021, Sunderland was nominated for University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards in 2021, as well as being named University of the Year for social inclusion in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.
