Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to help recognise, and celebrate, the importance recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet. It is a day for the world to come together and put the planet first.
This year's theme focuses on the “recycling fraternity” – those who put themselves on the frontline to collect waste and recycling during the multiple lockdowns.
So, how is the University of Sunderland helping contribute to a greener future through recycling?
-
In 2020/21, the University reported approximately 260 tonnes of waste was sent for recycling – that’s the average weight of 4,215 people! During this time, the University also sent approximately 175 tonnes of waste to be used for ‘energy from waste’ processes.
-
Recycled aggregate materials were used as much as possible during construction of the University’s new Veterans and Memorial gardens.
-
The plan for upcoming demolition of the Design Centre at the University's City Campus includes criteria to ensure that at least 95% of the waste will be recycled.
- The University ensures that as much waste as possible is recycled and that all waste is disposed of through registered carriers. Find out more about how we do this here.
