Dominic Wilcox: How to Find Inspiration, Invention and Ideas8 March 2017, Sir Tom Cowie Lecture Theatre, Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s
Dominic’s talk will take a high-speed journey through the Sunderland born artist and designer’s creative life so far, examining his constant search for ideas and inspiration wherever he can find it. Starting in Sunderland as a school boy and ending at the United Nations, via the Late Show in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Dominic works between the worlds of art, design, craft and technology to create innovative and thought provoking objects and sketchbook innovations. Recent project ideas include the design of a pair of shoes with inbuilt GPS to guide the wearer home, a Binaudios device to listen to the sounds of a city, a race against a 3D Printer at the V&A, and a stained glass driverless car of the future.

Michael Wood: Travels in Time - Making History on TV
5 April 2017, Sir Tom Cowie Lecture Theatre, Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s
With clips from the Dark Ages to Alexander the Great, and from Kibworth to China – not to mention a visit to Wearmouth! – Michael Wood looks back over three decades of documentary making. Full of fun, anecdote and insight, this promises to be an absorbing evening.
For over 30 years, historian and broadcaster Michael Wood has brought history alive for viewers and readers in Britain, the US and further afield.
He is the author of several highly praised books on English history including In Search of the Dark Ages, Domesday, and In Search of England, and well over one hundred documentary films, among them In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great and The Story of India, which the Wall Street Journal described as ‘still the gold standard’ of documentary history making.
The Independent newspaper called his Story of England, which told the tale of one village, Kibworth in Leicestershire, through British history, ‘the most innovative history series ever on TV’. The Story of China, his most recent programme shown on BBC2, embarks on a great historical adventure, exploring the stories, people and landscapes that have helped create China’s distinctive character and genius over four thousand years.
