Daniel Thompson, Head Coach with City of Sunderland Amateur Swimming Club, who last year won Coach of the Year award at the 2015 North East Disability Sports Awards, received an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Sunderland this week.
Daniel, who has also been selected by British Swimming as one of its group of coaches preparing for the Paralympic Games in Rio, said: "Don't be frightened to chase your dreams – be relentless in your pursuit of them, that's been my approach and it's got me where I am.
"Seeing the enthusiasm on the faces of the graduates was the most inspiring part of attending the ceremony. I'm really here on behalf of the our team, I'm so proud of the programme we have built up and our athletes, including the two athletes we have going off to the Games. I'm fortunate to front it all, but what I'm doing is fine-tuning the talent and hard work already there."
