How Charlie Hardwick has inspired a new generation of actors

Budding actors at the University of Sunderland had one last chance this year to gain invaluable insight into the acting industry from former Emmerdale star Charlie Hardwick.

Charlie spoke to Screen Performance students as part of a series of talks that sees professionals from the screen and stage offer advice to students to foster talent and employability.

Students heard from Charlie about her career which spans from her appearance as Sian in Byker Grove to Emmerdale to last year’s Sunderland Empire Panto.

Charlie said: “I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my career journey and many varied experiences with the students.

“It was also a good session for me personally, as I had to consider many aspects of my work and experiences that I hadn't examined. I came away with renewed vigour.”

Charlie added: “It's vital to have access to people who have actually worked in the industry who can share real insights into a relatively closed business.

“Someone who is part of it can help impart the craft as well as graft that is required to succeed.

“Also, it's important for young people to see someone from their community who has achieved career within the industry. Hopefully they can act as a role model and encourage the students to strive for their goals.”

This series of talks was made possible through the partnership between the University and Live Theatre, Newcastle.

Cameron Mair, who studies Screen Performance, said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic. I mean we have met some amazing people.

“It’s been so insightful to hear about their experiences and just learn from them.”

Camerion added: “I think because all of these people are industry professionals and they are working in the industry, you’re getting first hand insight from them.

“Having that information as we are graduating, going into the industry, is invaluable.”
