In the week that the government confirmed £25 million for work to start on the Crown Works Studios in Sunderland, a Sunderland academic is paving the way for film professionals of the future, as he becomes a member of the prestigious BAFTA Connect.
Gary Stubbs, Senior Lecturer in Media Production (Film & TV) at the University of Sunderland has been made a member of BAFTA Connect in recognition of his real-world experience in the film and TV industry as an Assistant Director and his work supporting complex productions during the pandemic.
“Throughout my time at the University, I have been committed to integrating academic insights with real-world industry practices, ensuring my work remains aligned with the latest developments in film and television,” says Gary. “We provide our students with insights that mirror current industry expectations and standards.”
As a member of BAFTA Connect, Gary will gain exclusive access to industry events, screenings, masterclasses, and discussions with leading professionals across media.
This first-hand insight and support from BAFTA will not just directly impact Gary’s external production work in the film and television industry but also keep his teaching firmly anchored in real-world practices, helping him bridge the gap between academia and industry.
Gary says: “I was honoured to be accepted into BAFTA Connect. This opportunity provides a platform for collaboration with other professionals, further broadening my understanding of emerging trends and best practices.
"I’m excited to get started as a member and look forward to seeing what the future holds. My involvement in BAFTA Connect also enables me to contribute to, and learn from, a prestigious community—a valuable experience I am excited to share with both my students and colleagues at the University of Sunderland.
“For my students, this opens doors to a unique learning experience that would otherwise be difficult to access. By incorporating my own industry insights, case studies, and resources into my teaching, I can provide a richer, more comprehensive view of the industry.
"This not only enhances the curriculum but also offers students a tangible connection to the professional world they aim to enter.”
Gary is also leading a separate national ScreenSkills Select industry insight webinar on 12 November in partnership with RTS Scotland and AD Guild where an expert panel will take a deep dive into the Assistant Directing Department.
Hear how the doors opened for individuals and learn about the roles they currently work in such as assistant directing trainee, 3rd AD, 2nd AD and 1st AD.
Tickets are free and available here.
