Cycling is a good way to help you keep fit and can be quicker than travelling by car in congested conditions. It is on the increase, with more people cycling to and from the campus, and we aim to make it as easy as possible to get here by bike.
Places to park your bike across both campuses
City Campus:
- Murray Library (on-street racks)
- The Gateway (on-street racks)
- City Space (secure cycle hub - ID card required)
- Hope Street Xchange (cycle lockers - padlock required)
- Helen McCardle House (cycle lockers - padlock required)
Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's:
- University Square (on-street racks)
- Reg Vardy Building (on-street racks)
- Cycle lockers (adjacent to the loading bay)
- Wearside View (covered cycle shelter)
- St Peters Gate (cycle lockers - padlock required)
We also have shower facilities in CitySpace and Darwin Building (ground floor room 003) at city campus and in David Goldman Informatics Centre (accessible toilet and shower, ground floor room 012) at Sir Tom Cowie Campus, St Peter's.
Cycle Hub for Staff and Students at City Campus
The Cycle Hub is a secure bicycle storage facility on City Campus, between Edinburgh Building and City Space featuring secure storage for 32 bicycles, lockers, internal CCTV and an alarm system. The access control system was recently upgraded into a secure maglock system and access is restricted to those with a campus card only. Advanced CCTV analytics and alarm alerts were also implemented to monitor the perimeter and threshold of the storage area. The system is designed to detect loitering and trespassing providing a safe and reliable area for students and staff to store their bicycles free of charge.
Visitors
Visitors are welcome to use the on-street cycle racks located around campus. It is important to keep your bike secure. Use a good lock and double lock your bike where possible.
Contact parkingservices@sunderland.ac.uk or 0191 515 3366 if you have any issues.
Planning your route
One of the first things you need to do when cycling to/from campus is plan your route. Komoot is a great online resource to navigate journeys by bicycle or on foot (select bike touring as your sport for off-road cycle routes).
