Lecturer in Primary Education

With over 20 years of experience as a primary school teacher, I now work as a lecturer in the School of Education. I enjoy supporting students and helping them to become reflective and confident early career teachers.

I am passionate about teaching English – both its importance within education and as a life skill. Supporting and encouraging pupils to develop a love of reading and writing has always been a goal of mine in the classroom. I also enjoy mentoring and coaching students. I have recent and relevant knowledge of the primary curriculum, with a particular focus on English, including the latest Ofsted requirements and policy.

Teaching and supervision

I currently work across the following ITT courses:

I lead two modules for PGCE Primary Education students – PRI352 and PRIM04.

I am also a Personal Academic Tutor for students across several courses (undergraduate and postgraduate) and also a University-based Mentor (UBM), supporting trainees during their school experiences.

Research interests for potential research students

Primary English: the importance of teaching vocabulary. Teaching reading and writing.

My area of expertise is primary education and I have taught in most primary year groups. In addition, I am an experienced English coordinator. A large part of my role in school involved promoting good progress and outcomes for pupils from nursery through to Year 6. I led, monitored, and evaluated the whole school English policy, implementing changes when needed.

I have considerable experience in supporting and mentoring primary colleagues, helping to develop their knowledge regarding subject content and delivery across all primary key stages, and also aiding them in developing successful pedagogical practice.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
