Lecturer in Education

I am the Integrated Foundation Year deputy coordinator and the pathway lead for the Education, Wellbeing and Development Integrated Foundation Year, which is the first year of three integrated foundation year courses.

I worked in the further education sector, before joining University of Sunderland. I was lecturer in the School of Education on the PCET generic and English pathways and developed the enhanced mentoring model which is still delivered at Durham Sixth Form Centre before working on the Integrated Foundation Year programme.

I now coordinate and teach on the Integrated Foundation Year where I can draw on my knowledge of further education to support students to develop their skills and knowledge to enable successful transition from level 3 to level 4 in a higher education setting.

As an active member of the Foundation Year Network, I was inspired to establish the Foundation Year North East (FYNE) network, which brings together foundation programme staff from across all five of the universities in the north-east of England.

I am passionate about inclusive education that considers the learner holistically and aim to enable my students to develop inclusive practices in the education, childcare and health and social care professions.

Research

I have conducted research with the aim of promoting greater student autonomy and opportunities for students to engage in meaningful assessment activity which was presented at RAISE 2022.

I evaluated the use of ePortfolio to promote engagement and authentic reflection with integrated foundation students and shared my findings at the Foundation Year Network Conference 2023.

Future projects include measuring the impact on inclusivity across the curriculum when school staff engage with gender and diversity training.

I am a poetry therapy practitioner in training through the International Academy for Poetry Therapy.
